What should I do with the energy contract in the event of a death?

After the death of a spouse or partner, there is often a lot of administrative work ahead. We list all the steps you need to take to put your contract back in order after a death and try to make your life as easy as possible.

Letting a contract continue in the name of the deceased is not allowed by law. It is therefore necessary for someone to stop or (temporarily) take over the contract. Which option is best depends on the situation.

You continue to live in the property as a partner.

In this case, you keep the contract, but we change the name on the contract. You can contact our customer service department and provide us with the following details:

  • Death certificate.
  • New bank and contact details (if necessary).

You do not have to do anything else, your contract and rates remain the same as before.

You move into the property yourself as a family member or friend

In this case you will sign a new contract, you can easily do this via our website or click here. We need the following data:

  • An energy transfer document with the details of the deceased customer and yourself.
  • New bank and contact details.

6 to 8 weeks after the takeover, you will receive a final invoice from us for the discontinued contract. Do you also have solar panels from us? Then you can choose what to do with them: you can keep the solar panels (and then you only pay us for the solar energy you use yourself, at the same, fixed rate that remains unchanged for 30 years) or you can take over the solar installation, at a predetermined price described in the contract.

It is not yet clear what will happen

In this situation, it is important that an energy contract is present. We will then change the name on the contract to 'heirs of'. Contact our customer service department here and provide us with the following details:

  • Death certificate.
  • New contact details (if necessary).

As soon as it is clear who will take over the contract, they will sign a new contract. At the time the new contract starts, we will stop the other contract. 6 to 8 weeks after this, you will receive a final invoice from us. Do you also have solar panels from us? Then you can choose what to do with them: you can keep the solar panels (and then you only pay us for the solar energy you use yourself, at the same, fixed rate that remains unchanged for thirty years) or you can take over the solar installation, at a predetermined price described in your contract.

Someone new moves into the property

At the time of handing over the keys, you and the new occupant will complete an energy transfer document. Be sure to indicate that it is a death, so we save you the mails about moving. We will then ensure the correct termination of the contract. You can expect a final invoice from us 6 to 8 weeks after settlement. Do you also have solar panels from us? Then you can choose what to do with them: you can keep the solar panels (and then you only pay us for the solar energy you use yourself, at the same, fixed rate that remains unchanged for thirty years) or you can take over the solar installation, at a predetermined price described in your contract.
