After the death of a spouse or partner, there is often a lot of administrative work to be done. We list all the steps you need to take to get your contract back in order after a death and try to relieve you of all your worries.
Running a contract in the name of the deceased is not allowed by law. It is therefore necessary for someone to terminate the contract or (temporarily) take over.
Which option is best depends on the situation.
You continue to live in the home as a partner.
In that case, you keep the contract, but we change the name on the contract. You can contact our customer service and provide us with the following information:
- Death certificate.
- New bank and contact details (if necessary).
You don't have to do anything else, your contract and rates remain the same as before.
You will live in the home as a family member or friend.
In that case you sign a new contract, you can easily do this via our website or click here. We need the following information:
- An energy takeover document with the details of the deceased customer and yourself.
- New bank and contact details.
6 to 8 weeks after the takeover, you will receive a final invoice from us for the terminated contract. Do you also have solar panels from us? Then you can choose what you do with them: you can keep the solar panels (and then you only pay us for the solar energy that you use yourself, at the same, fixed rate that remains unchanged for thirty years) or you can - take over the installation, at a predetermined price described in the contract.
It is not yet clear what will happen.
In this situation it is important that an energy contract is in place. We will then change the name on the contract to 'heirs of'. Contact our customer service here and provide us with the following information:
- Death certificate.
- New contact details (if necessary).
Once it is clear who will take over the contract, he/she will sign a new contract. When the new contract starts, we will terminate the other contract. You will receive a final invoice from us 6 to 8 weeks after this. Do you also have solar panels from us? Then you can choose what you do with them: you can keep the solar panels (and then you only pay us for the solar energy that you use yourself, at the same, fixed rate that remains unchanged for thirty years) or you can installation, at a predetermined price described in your contract.
Someone new is moving into the house.
At the time of key transfer, you complete an energy transfer document together with the new resident. Be sure to let us know that it concerns a death, and we will save you the emails regarding moving. We will then ensure a correct termination of the contract. You can expect a final invoice from us 6 to 8 weeks after settlement. Do you also have solar panels from us? Then you can choose what you do with them: you can keep the solar panels (and then you only pay us for the solar energy that you use yourself, at the same, fixed rate that remains unchanged for thirty years) or you can installation, at a predetermined price described in your contract.
