Fixed, variable or dynamic energy contract: what’s the difference, and which one is right for me?

The main difference lies in the way your energy tariff is determined.

Fixed-term energy contract: your energy price remains the same for the duration of your contract. This gives you greater certainty about your tariff, but you do not automatically benefit from any price reductions. If predictability is your main priority, a fixed-term contract may be a good choice.

In Flanders, we offer ‘Goedkope Stroom’ with a 3-year fixed term. In Wallonia, you can opt for ‘Goedkope Stroom’ with a 1-year fixed term. View our fixed-term contracts here.

Fixed-variable energy contract: 1,800 kWh of your tariff is fixed, whilst another part may change in line with developments in the energy market. This allows you to combine the certainty of a fixed tariff with the opportunity to benefit from price reductions. At the same time, your tariff may also increase.

Dynamic energy contract: your energy price changes every hour in line with the current market price. You pay less when prices are low and more when they are high. This contract is particularly suitable for those who can shift their energy consumption to cheaper times and have a digital meter.

Which contract suits you best depends on how much certainty you want, how much price fluctuation you can and are willing to cope with, and how flexibly you can use your energy.

Do you have solar panels?

In Flanders, you can also opt for ‘Cheap Electricity’ with a fixed feed-in tariff for 3 years. You’ll then receive a fixed feed-in tariff of 4 cents per kWh for the electricity you feed into the grid for three years, even when electricity prices are negative. Do you also have gas?

If so, you can combine your gas contract with your electricity contract. You can choose either a variable gas tariff, where the price changes monthly in line with the energy market, or a fixed gas tariff for one year. After the first year, this gas tariff becomes variable. Gas is only available in combination with an electricity contract.
